5 Essentials for a Healthy Kitchen

5 Essential Tools for a Healthy Kitchen

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be hard, and often times the more simple you can keep it the healthier it becomes. With some proper planning and a little practice, you can become a nutrition pro and be on the path to a healthier you.
Most current medical literature regarding nutrition points to a whole-food plant-based diet as the best dietary option for maintaining health and reversing disease. Whole food means keeping what you eat as close as is reasonably possible to its original state. Plant-based means at least 80% of the calories you eat will come from a plant-based source.
In keeping with this, there are some essential tools you should consider for healthier cooking. Here are my first 5 go to things you need in the kitchen.
Pressure cooker – I use an Instapot. Very easy to use and allows you to quickly cook food that would normally take much longer (think dry beans). You can use different stocks and seasoning to flavor your food in different ways. You can also cook large batches of food for meal prepping throughout the week. Most importantly, the foods you cook are fresh, replacing canned food or processed food.
Oil mister – using an oil mister and filling it with a healthy oil like olive oil, can help you reduce the amount of oil you use when you cook.
A good set of knives – meal-prepping, especially while following a whole-food plant-based diet will leave you chopping a lot. Having a good knife and keeping it sharpened will allow you to chop and meal prep with ease.
Measuring tools – if you really want to keep lean, you need to know how much you are eating. Don’t guess at this, measure it. Included in this would be a good set of measuring spoons, measuring cups and a scale.
Blender/food processor – many of my weekly meal plans include either a protein shake or a smoothie, and there is no better way to make one than with a good blender. A good blender is also great for homemade dressings and sauces, which can be made with ingredients to control unnecessary fats and sugars. I use a Food Ninja, that has both a big pitcher for making many servings, or a single serve cup, for daily use.
With a little planning and practice these 5 tools will have you well on your way to eating better, achieving your goals and feeling good about what fuels your body.
